COMPOSER’S NOTE:
The brilliant NYC-based pianist Katie Reimer asked me to compose a new work for her. In this piece, variations and musical responses work in collaboration with the choral music of J. S. Bach: Jesu, du mein liebstes Leben, Valet will ich dir geben, and O Welt, ich muss dich lassen. Each chorale appears throughout the settings, and "soul" refers to my musical response to the death of my father this year, and the use of Black folk music, including rock, hip-hip, and soul music, within the score.
