COMPOSER’S NOTE:
Just off the coast of Haiti, is a small island named Navassa. It’s been claimed, at different times, by Haiti, the United States, France, and Spain. My father told me there may be gold in the waters buried deep in old ships downed at sea. For years, American mining companies removed millions of pound of rich guano deposits. There once was a lighthouse there, and no one inhabits the island now. I felt that lonely, isolated place deserved a national anthem, so I composed one for a place I’ve never been to, but is a mystic part of my childhood memories and my father’s stories. -DBR
