COMPOSER’S NOTE:
I wrote Filter in the summer of 1992 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, at a small music and dance festival. I had been playing a version of the work for years before, but decided it was time to notate it for myself and others. The work then became the first movement of my first violin concerto, Voodoo Violin Concerto, composed in 2002. It’s the first time I notated one of my many extended techniques for the violin, where “filtering” is moving the violin bow as close to, and as far away from, the bridge as possible, creating an electronic-sounding filtering effect. In 2017, the acclaimed violinist Rachel Barton Pine, asked me to created a new introduction and closing to the work, and that version was published  for the first time in 2024. - DBR

Featured by Jasper Sewell on the NPR’s From the Top. “That piece was rock n’ roll” -Peter Dugan, From The Top

“It is an adrenaline rush, both fun and dangerous.” -Augustin Hadelich speaking with Ludwig Van Toronto

“An intensely bluesy introduction gives way to a rapid-fire fast section of syncopated rhythms that have more to do with American fiddling than anything but without losing that gutsy, gritty element from the blues, pushing ahead in a nearly breathless manner. Filter proved an excellent showpiece…” -EarRelevant
