COMPOSER’S NOTE:

Father Antonio’s Contrapuntal Prayers for Michael is a musical gift to the city of San Antonio and its humble beginnings under the guidance of Antonio de Olivares (1630-1722). The work is for large orchestra and features a theme and set of variations. It’s rousing, sentimental, complex music echoes the works of the good Father de Olivares and the complex history of San Antonio itself and its relationship to Spain, France and, of course, a new and emerging America. Having spent time in San Antonio, I find these complexities in culture, religion, and state-wide identity continuing today.
